A new higher technical qualification (HTQ) to equip students with the digital technology skills that employers need has launched at The Sheffield College.
The Higher National Certificate in Digital Technologies prepares students for a career in the rapidly evolving field of cybersecurity and cloud networking.
Highly valued by employers, the Level 4 qualification is being offered by UC Sheffield which is home to the college’s university level qualifications.
The first cohort of students have just started in September 2024. New staff with industry experience of e-learning, cyber threats and network security, have been appointed to teach the course.
Tina Harrison, Assistant Principal of Higher Education, The Sheffield College, said: “We wanted to launch a course that aligns with the digital sector and gives our students the knowledge, skills and confidence to work and thrive in that area.
“We have launched the course in response to feedback from employers and want to build on that to showcase the wide range of career paths available to our students.”
HTQs are new or existing Level 4 and 5 qualifications that equip students with the knowledge and skills for specific careers and can lead to a top up degree. They combine the academic knowledge of a university level qualification with technical skills applied in the workplace.
Designed with employers, HTQs are suitable for students progressing from Level 3 qualifications including vocational diplomas, T Levels and advanced apprenticeships.
UC Sheffield offers HTQs in business leadership and management, construction, engineering, and health and social care, that are developed with employers, as well as a range of honours and foundation degrees.
The college achieved a silver rating in the Teaching and Excellence Framework 2023. Run by the Office for Students, the TEF focuses on teaching, learning and students achieving positive outcomes from their studies.
The TEF assesses and rates universities and colleges for excellence above a set of minimum requirements for quality and standards. The ratings reflect the extent to which a provider delivers an excellent experience and outcomes for undergraduate students.
